home water filter augusta, me It is quite common for homes here in Central Maine to have hard water. This is especially true for homes that use wells rather than a public water supply.

Hard water can cause problems all around your home. It can shorten the life expectancy of your water heater by close to 50%. Hard water can cause toilets to flush more slowly and, because deposits can narrow drainpipes, lead to clogs. Skin can become dry and itchy, and hair can become dull. Your drinking water can taste bad. Plumbing connections can corrode. Laundry gets dingy. A soap scum-like residue can form in sinks and tubs that no amount of scrubbing can get rid of.

We install Water-Right equipment including water conditioning, whole-home water filtration, point-of-use water filtration, and ultraviolet and cartridge filters.

As with all our other HVAC and comfort equipment work, our water treatment maintenance services are backed up by the AFC Comfort Guarantee.

Here are some basics on what’s needed for water treatment maintenance and how often it’s needed.

Water softener maintenance

The frequency of service for water softeners depends on the level of hardness in your water, typically requiring maintenance every 12 months. However, there is work you can do between tune-ups. Maintaining a half-full brine tank is crucial to ensure the optimal functioning of your system. The media in the water softener tank typically lasts 10-15 years, but eventually, it will need replacement. If your tank is still in good condition, you can re-bed your water softener with new media.

Water filtration maintenance

There are several kinds of water filtration systems. Here’s some basic maintenance information about the more common ones.

Reverse osmosis: Reverse osmosis systems typically consist of multiple filters. It is advised that these systems get professional maintenance every six to 12 months. This maintenance includes changing the filters, replacing any O-rings as needed, and, if the reverse osmosis membrane is more than two years old, replacing it.

Ultraviolet water treatment: Ultraviolet systems utilize UV light to deactivate microorganisms, effectively enhancing water quality without the need for chemicals. However, it’s important to note that the UV bulb and sleeve can accumulate tannins and sediment, diminishing their disinfection capabilities. To maintain optimal performance, it is recommended to replace the bulbs at least every 12 months and the sleeves approximately every 2 years. Additionally, the UV sleeves should be cleaned at least once a year.
