How does a heat pump work? An outdoor compressor unit is connected to the indoor air handler, which is also known as the evaporator, by a tube that contains power lines, communications lines, and drain lines for condensate.

For cooling, the compressor, as its name suggests, compresses the refrigerant, which is then transported to the condenser. The refrigerant loses heat in the condenser, and this heat is transferred into the air outside. The now liquid refrigerant travels through a tube to the evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the indoor air that is blown over the evaporator coils. The cooled air is distributed throughout your house once it has been sufficiently cooled.

The closed-loop heat pump system is reversed in the winter for heating. Rather than taking heat from inside the house, it takes it from the colder air outside.

The refrigerant lowers in pressure and becomes a vapor, which then cools down much more than the outside air. Because heat flows from hot to cold, the refrigerant absorbs heat from its surroundings. The compressor on the outside pressurizes gas into a hot liquid once it has absorbed all of the available heat. The very hot refrigerant is delivered to your indoor coils, where your blower is used to release the heat into your home.
