How Can I Make My Propane Last Longer?

Written on: March 7, 2022

Follow these tips to save money on propane costs!

using propane maineEverything is more expensive these days, whether it’s gas for the car, groceries, or going out to eat. Inflation has us looking for ways we can save money.

By using propane in your Central Maine home, you’re already benefiting from its high efficiency. But there are ways you can cut your propane usage and your propane costs without having to sacrifice one bit of comfort.

1. Turn down the water heater

The factory-set temperature of most water heaters is set to 140°F. You don’t need it that high, honestly. There’s also a danger of scalding, especially for babies, children, and the elderly, at this temperature. Turn the water heater temperature down to 120˚ and enjoy plenty of hot water while reducing your propane usage. If you’re going away for more than a few days, turn your water heater to its “Vacation” or “Low” setting so it won’t kick on as frequently while you’re gone.

Do you want to use even less propane for water heating? A propane tankless water heater may help you save up to one-third or more on your propane usage for water heating.

2. Take care of your propane appliances

If you use propane for home heating, that’s what the majority of your propane gas will be used for. Keeping your furnace or boiler in excellent working order with an annual tune-up and regular filter replacement can help you use the minimum amount of propane necessary to keep your home warm, safe, and comfortable.

3. Use a Programmable or Smart Thermostat

Programmable and smart thermostats allow you to customize your thermostat settings for different temperatures at different times of the day. You won’t have to waste propane on heating the house while you’re at work since you forgot to lower the thermostat.

Today’s smart thermostats can be controlled using your smartphone or tablet, allowing you to maximize comfort while shaving off propane use—all in real-time!

4. Maintain Your Propane Tank

Your propane tank can develop small fissures or leaks that slowly deplete your supply over time. You should have your tank checked and serviced by a professional on a regular basis not just to safeguard your supply, but also to protect yourself and your family.
